3/4일 캐나다 중앙은행은 코로나바이러스 사태로 인한 경제적 충격에 대응하여 기준금리 (Key interest rate=Overnight rate)를 1.25%로 0.5%P 내렸습니다. 이는 2015년 이후 첫 인하이며 어제 미국도 기준금리를 0.5%P 내린 바 있습니다. 중앙은행은 향후 필요할 경우 통화정책을 다시 조정할 가능성이 있다고 덧붙였습니다.
이에 따라 시중은행의 변동금리 모기지 이자율도 하향 조정될 것으로 봅니다. 현재 (이번 기준금리 조정 전) 대형은행의 변동금리는 은행의 우대금리 (Prime rate=기준금리+1.2%P=3.95%) 마이너스 0.6~0.8%P (은행마다의 할인율)인 3.15~3.35% 수준입니다.
* 3/5일 RBC, TD 를 비롯한 대형은행들이 우대금리를 기준금리 하향폭인 0.5%P 인하하여 3.45%로 조정하였습니다.
* 3/13일 캐나다중앙은행은 기준금리를 0.5%P 더 내려 현재 기준금리는 0.75% 입니다.

The Bank of Canada is cutting its key interest rate target by half a percentage point, dropping it to 1.25 percent in response to the economic shock from the novel coronavirus outbreak.
The central bank says its target for the overnight rate is being trimmed because COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, “is a material negative shock” to the country’s economic outlook. In a written statement about the announcement, the bank said that prior to the outbreak, Canada’s economy had been operating “close to potential with inflation on target.”
“However, COVID-19 represents a significant health threat to people in a growing number of countries. In consequence, business activity in some regions has fallen sharply and supply chains have been disrupted. This has pulled down commodity prices and the Canadian dollar has depreciated.”
